Phang
Nga and Khaolak Activities and Top Things to do guide
is
one of the better ways to view the splendour of Phang Nga
Bay while keeping fit at the same time. There are a number
of kayaking companies that hire out kayaks (canoes) on an
individual basis or offer tours of the area.
can be done in
the nearby province of Krabi. The scenery is similar to Phang
Nga and the areas here that one can climb do not fall under
rulings from Nature reserves as does Phang Nga...so tempted
you might be, but please refrain from this sport in Phang
Nga Bay which is a National Park.
is a popular pastime
in the area and although the water tends to look greenish-brown,
it is clean. The colour of the water comes from the flora
in the area that has fallen into the water from the mangrove
waterways. If you don a pair of goggles you'll be amazed at
the underwater world that will great you. is another
popular pastime in the area. There are a number of birds unique
to the area plus many sea-eagles and Brahmany kites, that
put on spectacular displays as they dive, headfirst into the
bay and swoop up again, their beaks laden with fish. Hornbills
also frequent the area and often these are heard before they
are seen.
The bays in Phang
Nga contain many interesting coral reefs although the visibility
isn't the best due to the amount of vegetation remains that
wash into the bay from the mangrove lined shore and inlets.
Equipment can be rented from dive shops in Phang Nga and surrounding
areas such as Phuket and Krabi.
is a
popular sport although there are no tackle rental shops in
the area and it is advised that you either bring your own
rod or hire a boat including fishing gear and charter it to
Phang Nga for a day. One can always try ones luck at fresh-water
fishing in some of the inland river systems but you may not
get too many 'pan-sized fish' doing it this way, the ocean
is a better bet.
There are a number
of charter companies on Phuket Island that offer specific
charters to Phang Nga or you can 'bareboat' charter a yacht
and spend days meandering from one island to another in the
calm, protected waters of the area. A wonderful way to see
the area and one which the whole family, young or old will
thoroughly enjoy.
Eating
out in Thailand is one of the most unforgettable experiences
for any traveller to this part of the world and the area of
Phang Nga Bay is no different. Here you will find many popular
restaurants, markets and food stalls offering an assortment
of delicacies begging to be tried.
Food and eating is all part and parcel of Thai culture and
you will be amazed at the variety on offer. For those a little
wary of Thai food, there are plenty of international restaurants
offering a choice of anything from hamburgers to spaghetti
as well as other popular western dishes. All in all, the visitor
certainly won't go hungry, as there is something for every
taste.
Phang
Nga has very little in the way of local handicrafts for sale
other than fish-scale flowers made by the locals from many
of the outlying islands such as Kho Yao Noi or exquisitely
crafted bird cages and the like.
Artificial Flowers made by village women from rubber tree
leaves can be purchased from the Agricultural Dept. Office
in Phang-nga Town, and also from the Farm Women's Group in
various districts.
Sarongs and other clothing products tend to come from other
areas within Thailand, so if you are traveling elsewhere within
the country and plan on doing some extensive shopping your
best bet is to make your purchases there, if you are looking
for bargains.
On the other hand, as is often the case, if you do see something
that 'you simply have to have', then buy the item when you
see it as you probably won't find the exact product quite
like the one you originally fell for, somewhere else.
